John Glenn is a twentieth century hero in many peoples eyes.He was the first American to orbit the earth in space.in 1988, he became the oldest person to ever fly in space.
John Heschel Glenn Jr. on July 18, 1921, in Canbrigde Ohio.In 1939,John started at a Muskigum Collage.After 3 years,he began the Naval Avation Acadamy as hewas intrested in preflight.He married a women named Annie Caastor.He also became a part of the U.S Marine Corps in 1943, in the middle of worrld war two.
In 1957,he became the first person to make a nonstop supersonic flight from Los Angles to New York in less than 3 hours and 23 minutes.In 1957,after many trips around America,Glenn was chosen to be on of the first of 7 astronauts to go out into space.He trained for many months.Then finally,on Febuary 20,1962, he was lanched.The flight 1was the first by an american to go arpund the world.It cover 3 orbits,over 81,000 miles and took over four hours and 55 minutes.He was suppose to fly more orbits,but his concern that his capsules heat shield was loose, forced him to return to earth.But as it turned out,his heat shield was fine.
